The diesel locomotive series, known as the "Babelsbergerin" due to its origin, was built in series from 1962 onwards by the locomotive manufacturer "Karl Marx". The B'B'-coupled new V 180 series derived its designation from the installed engine: 2 x 900 hp. For universal use, even in front of passenger trains, the engines were equipped with a centrally mounted boiler. The top speed was 120 km/h, which was quite sufficient on the main lines of the GDR, only very few lines were designed for higher speeds. Class V 180 engines, and from 1970 Class 118, were in service throughout the territory of the GDR.
