In
order to speed up the change of traction, the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) procured a total of 378 Class V 200 locomotives (later BR 120) from the Soviet Union from 1966 to 1975. Since the locomotives lacked train heating ex works, they were mainly used for freight train traffic. Later, silencers were also added to curb the noise level of the engines. Due to the loud engine noise, the name "Taiga Drum" quickly became established for the locomotives.
