For decades, the n-cars of the Deutsche Bundesbahn were known as Silberlings. With over 5,000 units, this family of coaches became the dominant design for DB's commuter coaches from the sixties onwards. It was not until the nineties that they were gradually replaced by multiple units and double-decker coaches.
Typical features of the design of the seventies to nineties were the ocean-blue long beams, the large class numbers and the pictograms. A major modernization measure in the years 1978 to 1982 was the conversion of 200 control cars with a small driver's cab (known as a rabbit box) with the so-called Karlsruhe head.
The role models were at home in Freiburg im Breisgau. From there, they were used on the Rhine Valley Railway between Basel and Karlsruhe, but also on the Höllental Railway and hauled by diesel to Breisach and Elzach.
